Office Of National Statistics Reveals How Energy Bills Have Soared In 10 Years

The Office of National Statistics has revealed how gas bills have almost tripled, rising by 190% in the last 10 years, with electricity prices soaring by 120% in the same period. This rise was despite reports suggesting that there had been very little change in the volume of household energy consumption.

The rise in energy prices is far greater than the 30% rise in the cost of household goods and services in the same time period.

The Office of National Statistics has said:
"The UK economy has now grown for three consecutive quarters. However, the economic position of households remains under pressure as prices continue to rise more quickly than earnings."

The ONS report was released at a time when four of the big six energy suppliers; Scottish Power, British Gas, SSE and Npower, have announced large increases in their energy bills to customers. (Source: The Telegraph / Office for National Statistics)
